So last night I had a little incident. I was playing second base at my softball game tonight when this guy hit a hard bouncing grounder straight to me. The ball took a wierd bounce just before it got to me and hit me in the knee (I've included a picture of the softball stitching imprint it left on my knee). It then hit my right thumb straight on the tip of it and I cried like a little girl for about 30 seconds. There's a rule in my league that there has to be 3 females on the field or your team gets an automatic out every time they reach that spot in the batting order. Since I could bend my thumb at first, I kept playing and would ice my thumb when I was waiting for my turn to bat. I got a couple hits after that but got out every time. I also threw a couple people out, but we still lost.
By the end of the game, my thumb was swollen up to twice the size and I could no longer bend my thumb (It's hard to tell how swollen it was in the picture but it was really obvious when I put it next to my other thumb). Since it was my gun hand, I decided I better go get it xrayed right away, so I got my coworker to give me a ride up to the Emergency Room. After a couple hours and three xrays, the doctor showed me the two fractures in my thumb and got the nurse to splint my hand.

I have an appointment with the hand surgeon on July 1st to see how long I'll be out of commission. I will probably be on light duty for a while and I'll have to learn how to do a lot of things with my left hand. It's amazing to figure out how much I use my right hand for. I couldn't even pull my hair back this morning. It's also amazing how much a thumb can hurt. Even on the Lortab I couldn 't sleep very good last night.

Yes, I have a full forearm splint for a broken thumb. Sad huh?
